Sustainable Rug Fair

The word has come up before, but is certainly not wrong to mention again. Durable. One of the main features of a jute rug from the Fair collection. The Fair collection includes rugs made from 100% jute. For the plant lovers among us, this means a plant! Jute is extracted mainly in countries like Bangladesh and India. In tropical temperatures, it grows within four months, after which the long stems of the plant are cut off and then soaked in water for 20 days. This washes away the superfluous dirt and then separates the wood pipe and bast fibres. The bast fibres are washed one more time in cold running water to ensure that really all the dirt is washed away. After drying in the sun for 2-3 days, the bast fibres are sorted by strength, length and colour.

The power of Fair rugs

So how does one create a Fair jute rug? Quite simple really. Bundles of bark fibres are braided into a rug! This makes a braided rug unique and special because you can see the actual structures reflected. An additional advantage of a braided rug is that it is very hard-wearing. Maybe something you don't easily think of with a dried plant fibre, but it is nevertheless true! You can also see this in other natural rugs.
