Why do we generally pay less attention to the 'outdoor interior'? With the simple addition of an outdoor rug, you make any outdoor space so much cosier! Not only do you eliminate boring patio tiles, you immediately involve the outdoor space in the rest of the interior. So you get to enjoy your outdoor retreat all year round. How do you choose the perfect outdoor rug? In this blog we'll guide you step by step!

A garden, balcony, terrace, veranda or other outdoor space is as it were an extension of the house. Where we indoors do our best to create perfect combinations and make everything fit seamlessly together, we settle for a set garden furniture outdoors. Nothing wrong with that of course, but not very inviting to relax in the garden. We should put the same time and energy into the outdoor interior as we do indoors. It can be so much nicer with the simple addition of for example an outdoor rug! Not only do you eliminate boring patio tiles, you immediately involve the outdoor space in the rest of the interior. So you get to enjoy your outdoor retreat all year round. How do you choose the perfect outdoor rug? In this blog we'll guide you step by step!

Step 1: Material

An outdoor rug is different from a rug for indoors. Unlike a regular rug, an outdoor rug must be wear and colour fast and resistant to various weather conditions. So choose synthetic materials that can take a beating.

All outdoor rugs in our range are made from polypropylene, a synthetic fabric that ticks all these boxes. Rain or shine, they can stay outside all year round. Plus, the options for colours and prints with polypropylene are endless! Go for Bohemian vibes with a jute-look outdoor rug or choose an Oriental print and imagine yourself on a Middle Eastern terrace! A nice bonus is that polypropylene is also very low-maintenance. Does your outdoor rug need a clean? The garden hose or a bucket of water works wonders!

Step 2: Shape

Curious about what shape outdoor rug works best in your garden, balcony or terrace? The shape you choose makes more difference than you might think. It not only determines the look, but also how you experience the space. A rectangular outdoor rug is ideal under a garden table or lounge set: it frames the seating area and creates a stylish island that immediately catches the eye.

A shape that is actually more commonly seen outdoors than indoors is round. Do you have a small outdoor space or want to soften angular shapes? Then go for a round outdoor rug! Besides, round outdoor rugs are perfect for rug layering. This simply means mixing and matching different rugs. This creates an exciting dynamic between different styles, shapes and colours. Definitely worth trying!

Step 3: Size

The best fitting size is partly determined by the available space and the furniture. Do you have a balcony or a narrow sofa you want to brighten up? Then go for a balcony rug. The rule of thumb for garden furniture is as follows: choose an outdoor rug that is wider than the longest side of the set. Make sure you have approximately 20-40 cm of rug left on both sides. You create the nicest effect when the outdoor rug connects loose elements together. In the case of a round shape and a corner sofa, the outdoor rug should reach both seating ends. Are you unsure about the right size outdoor rug? We have clearly set out how large an outdoor rug should be per situation.

Step 4: Colour

Where indoors you might be more reserved with striking items, the outdoor space is the place to go all out with prints and colours. Nature itself is of course also rich in various colours, which means that a colourful or patterned outdoor rug will blend nicely with the rest of the surroundings. This means that a striking outdoor rug won't be as much of an eyesore as it would be between a pair of white painted walls. So when choosing an outdoor rug, also consider the colours of the plants and flowers for a nice whole. Are the sunflowers already in bloom? Then go for a yellow outdoor rug!
