Choosing the right rug size can sometimes feel like a tricky task. We're happy to give you some guidance to help you select the right size rug. Are you curious about which sizes will work in your interior? Read on!

Large rug | What should you look for?

The shape and dimensions of the rug are an important first step when making a choice. Are you buying a rug for your seating area? Make sure the rug extends partially under the sofa and/or armchairs. This creates a cohesive look for the seating area and makes it appear larger. A rug that's too small unfortunately has the opposite effect. A small rug XS-S can make a room look smaller than it actually is.

A large rug XL-L really comes into its own in spaces with plenty of room. This is often the living room or bedroom. A garden can also offer plenty of space for a large outdoor rug. It's no wonder that placing an XXL outdoor rug is popular in larger properties and gardens. We're also increasingly seeing these XXL outdoor rugs in our indoor interiors. A large rug for the living room or bedroom is very popular.

Did you know that an XXL outdoor rug can be up to four metres long? Just as long as a white shark!

The size of your rug depends on your interior style. Do you have a large living room or bedroom? Then a large rug will look fantastic. Of course, this doesn't mean a small rug can't work in a large room. When laying a smaller rug, it's important to look at the size of the furniture it will accompany. If the rug's dimensions match the furniture size, the rug will work perfectly in the space!

Types of rugs

There are countless types of rugs. Shapes, colours, sizes, designs and different types of materials! With such a wide range, you can choose a rug made from natural materials, for example. Think of a wool rug or jute rug. These natural rugs are 100% natural and sustainable. These special rugs give your interior a natural character and have a positive effect on the environment.

When choosing a new rug, it's not only the material that matters. Colour is also a consideration. Do you have a favourite colour? Then you'll naturally want to use as much of this colour as possible throughout your home. You can also choose your new rug's colour to match your interior. Are you mad about blue, for example? Then it makes sense to look for a blue rug. If you don't want to overdo it and fill the room with blue, you can also perfectly choose neutral colours. A grey rug or white rug can work in any interior.

We're upping the ante even more. The design of your rug can also be a tricky choice. Do you want a striped rug or are you someone who goes for a floral rug? The choice is huge! Choosing a rug design defines your character and interior style. Do you have a ceiling with glow-in-the-dark moons in your bedroom? Then a rug with stars would be perfect here!

How large should a rug be?

The last choice to make: 'how large should a rug be?' Choosing the right rug size can sometimes be tricky. Just like choosing a colour, design and material. As mentioned before, rug size depends on several factors. When choosing a rug for the living room, you'll often find yourself looking at rugs larger than 160 × 230 cm.

The size of the space is also an important factor when choosing your rug size. Do you want to place your rug in the bedroom and is it not spacious enough for an XXL rug? Then you can consider the smaller sizes. These are actually ideal for bedrooms. Popular bedroom rug sizes are 120 × 170 cm or 140 × 200 cm. These rugs fit perfectly beside the bed and offer plenty of space to walk comfortably across.

Tip #1

Not sure about the size? Use painter's tape to mark out the dimensions on the floor. This will immediately give you a better sense of the effect the rug will have on your interior.

Custom-made rugs

Choosing a rug size is the last hurdle when selecting a rug. It may also be that you have a specific size in mind that doesn't appear in the search results. Annoying! Fortunately, most rugs can be made to order. A custom-made rug has the advantage of being exactly the size you want.

Many people measure the space first to work out which size would be best for their interior. For most people, choosing a rug size is straightforward because the desired size is available.
