Finally found the right colour? Managed to find the right print within the complete range of rugs? And made a decision about the material? You might think the stress is over. But no, there's one last step before the order can be completed: choosing the right rug size. Although it remains a personal preference and taste, there are a number of factors to take into account when determining the right rug size.

How large should a rug be?

Wondering how large a rug should be? You're not alone! Choosing the right size rug can make or break a room. A rug that's too small often disappears into the interior, whilst a rug that's too large can overwhelm the space.

To determine how large a rug should be, first ask yourself: where do I want to place it? The location is key. A rug under the sofa requires different dimensions than a rug under the bed or dining table.

Wondering how large a rug should be for your living room, bedroom or dining room? A simple rule of thumb will help you: choose a size where your furniture stands partly or completely on the rug. This creates a harmonious and atmospheric whole. We explain below exactly which sizes you need per room.

Rug in the seating area

The rug size you need also depends on whether you place the rug under or in front of the sofa. A common rule for creating connection and unity is to place the front legs of the sofa on the rug.

Measure the sofa and add approximately 15 to 20 centimetres on each side. With a two-seater sofa with a width of 190 centimetres, you arrive at a rug 160x230 cm according to this example.

Are you furnishing a smaller space? Then place the rug in front of the sofa to create a spatial effect. Don't choose a rug that's too large, as this can dominate. In this case, it's better to choose a rug that's roughly as wide as the sofa. With a 190 centimetre wide sofa, you could opt for a rug 140x200 cm.

With a corner sofa, you again need to consider whether there's enough space to place the rug wholly or partly on it. If you don't have that space, add approximately 15 to 20 centimetres to the total width. This way the rug extends slightly at the long side and reaches halfway along the chaise longue at the short side. Do you have a corner sofa that's 275 centimetres long? Then choose a rug 200x290 cm. Want the rug to stand completely on it? Then add approximately 20 to 30 centimetres on each side to the sofa's width. A rug 230x330 cm fits best with a corner sofa that's 275 cm wide.

Tip: To get a better picture of how a certain size looks in relation to your furniture, you can use painter's tape or newspapers to mark the size on the floor.

Rug under the dining table

Placing a rug under the dining table is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason: it creates more atmosphere and unity in the dining area. To have enough space to slide chairs back smoothly, it's important to keep at least 40 to 60 centimetres of rug free around the table. For a rectangular table of average size 90x180 cm, a rug of 200x290 cm is a common choice. For larger tables, such as a table of 130x220 cm, we also recommend a rug of 200x290 cm, so the chairs don't stand on or over the edge of the rug. Round tables follow slightly different proportions: for a table with a diameter of 150 cm, a round rug of approximately 190 to 200 cm works best. The spacing for a round rug is 30 to 60 cm. For square tables we recommend allowing 40-70 cm extra all around to maintain the same spatial effect.

Tip: Because you'll be dealing with sliding chairs in the dining area, an underlay is highly recommended. It provides safety, is better for the rug and keeps the rug in place neatly.

Rug in the bedroom

When looking for the right bedroom rug size, it's helpful to first think about where you want to place it. Place the rug under your bed? Make sure it extends on both sides, so your feet meet soft carpet first when you get out of bed. Expect a strip of between 60 and 80 centimetres per side. You can also choose to place runners next to the bed on either side. Also nice: place a rug one-third under the bed or at the foot for a playful effect.
